Production

 

The Storsjön is a product that will be mass produced. Therefore there has to be thought carefully about how to execute these production procecces in the most optimal way. When the most efficient production process is chosen, there has to be just a small amount of unnecessary costs. Low production costs contribute in lowering the product price.

 

In the development of the Storsjön, the use of new materials, complex techniques and new production methods have been evaded. A few conceptual ideas have been cancelled since it would require new production lines or materials. The Storsjön does not consist out of any complex components or materials. This is very useful for IKEA because contracts with new suppliers are unnecessary in this scenario. All the materials that are used for the Storsjön are already used in production by IKEA. This excludes the acquiring of new production lines.

 

 

Supply Chain

Primary sector

To develop products, IKEA needs raw materials. However, IKEA is not a primary sector organisation. IKEA works closely with organisations which develop raw materials. They buy their materials from more than 1300 suppliers in 50 countries.

 

Secondary sector

In the secondary sector, manufacturers create IKEA products out of the raw materials.

The company in Poland is the largest wood production plant of IKEA.

 

Tertiary sector

This sector provides a service, such as transportation, retailing or banking. The company’s ships all the manufactured products to the distribution center which sorts out to which IKEA retail stores the products should be sent. As a result, the consumers can buy their products in almost 300 stores in 36 different countries.

 

 

Production place of materials and components

IKEA wood

Since IKEA makes a lot of his products out of wood, this can be obtained from the wood production company in Poland.

 

Acrylate

IKEA offers already acrylate, so IKEA has already a supplier for this material.

 

Lacquer for IKEA wood

The wood of IKEA needs to get a coating that protects the wood from water and scratches. The coating Acrylic modified lacquer can be used, this coating is scratch and water resistant. It also will not attach the painted colour.

 

Rail

The rail is a component IKEA does not already use. However IKEA has already suppliers for different kinds of rails. IKEA can choose to ask their supplier for rails, if they can manufacture this rail. Or IKEA can import this rail from its manufacturer.

 

Wheel

The wheel that is used for the Storsjön, is not from the IKEA assortiment. However, this wheel already exists and IKEA can import this component from its manufacturer.

 

Handle bathroom side

The handle on the side of the bathroom is an existing handle from the IKEA assortiment, called LANSA.

 

Handles shower side

The two handles on the shower side are not existing handles. These handles are designed on such a way that they fit and clamp exactly in the design of the Storsjön. Manufacturers of handles for IKEA can design this component itself, because it is not a difficult design.
